Denver Broncos To Trade No. 2 Pick?

John Elway is now an executive with the Denver Broncos and he made some telling remarks to Dave Krieger of the Denver Post. Elway implied that without a new collective bargaining agreement that includes a rookie wage scale, the Broncos would likely be looking to deal the No. 2 overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft.

Right now the No. 2 pick would cost a serious amount of cash. Last year the Detroit Lions gave No. 2 pick Ndamukong Suh a five-year, $68 million contract with $40 million in guaranteed money. So whoever gets picked at that spot in 2011 would expect at least that much and probably more.

After finishing 4-12 the Broncos have too many holes to be giving that much cash to one player, especially an unproven rookie. That said, if they stay in their current spot, the Broncos will likely have to go with a defensive presence. Denver was last in the NFL in total defense (390.8 yards per game), 25th in pass defense (236.3 ypg) and 31st in rushing defense (154.6 ypg).

The top of the 2011 draft is sure to be heavy on defensive players, and currently Scouts Inc.’s Todd McShay has the Broncos taking Auburn defensive tackle Nick Fairley with the second pick. That, of course, assumes the Carolina Panthers don’t take Fairley (McShay has Carolina taking Clemson’s DaQuan Bowers). On the other hand, Mel Kiper has Denver selection LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson (Kiper has Fairley going to the Panthers).

Cornerback is certainly a position of need for the Broncos, especially considering that Champ Bailey will turn 33 this offseason and is scheduled to become a free agent. But giving $40-plus million to a cornerback seems a bit much.

Elway may be right that Denver’s best option would be to trade down, save money and stockpile picks to fill the team’s numerous holes.

Bowers, Peterson and Fairly are too good to pass up. Players like that will completely change the face of a defense.

We often overreact to the idea of adding quantity over quality for rebuilding teams. There’s nothing like having a player who commands double-blocks, or who dominates one-on-one, or who takes away half the field as an elite cover man.

I’m a Packer fan, so it’s not personal to me, but Denver should stay where they are and take a truly great player.

John elway knows the history of union lock-outs vs management. Its all about the money”show me the money”If the players gave a damn, and had brains.their bargaining would be retirement, and health based.as so many players have spent their after football years in dire straits, and poor health.mentally, and physically. The owners are about their bottom line, and profit margin.roger goodell, talks out of both sides of his mouth,as well the owners.claiming health concerns of their offensive players.especially,Quarterbacks, running backs, and wide recievers. What?no concern for the health of lineman.Couldn’t be about the potential money lost, and value of the cost to management, could it?And if you are so concerned about the health of the players. Then how does adding to more games to the schedule.resolve that concern? Its about the money stupid.None of the above give a damn, about health,or injuries,or the longevity of the players.Neither the n.f.l.owners players,or sports pundents.None of the above are saying lets get it right; They are all saying lets get it right now. We’ll worry about the consequences later. So lets once again kick the can down the road.not face the truth.Get a quick fix to fame, and fortune. And be damned the consequences. The folks who are really being taken for a ride, screwed, and hustled.Because of their love of the game.in some cases addiction of the game.I myself am guilty of both. This is highway robbery of the sports industry’s Their outragious prices to their consumers.who only want to be apart of america;s favorite pastime.John elway may be smart enough to realize that only greed is at work here, not common sense, health, and retirement longetivity, and an appreciation of their fans, and consumers.Who deserve a little respect, and return from their investment as well.Jimmy Joe”The liarfryer”Wichita Kansas.
