A day after committing a pair of decisions that would have been characterized as “boners” back in the day when they weren’t just a thing in your pants, Cleveland Cavaliers coach David Blatt was on the defensive trying to justify his actions against the Bulls late in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
Decision 1 was attempting to call a timeout he did not have, which would have warranted a technical foul had any referee witnessed it. Decision 2 was to have LeBron James inbound Cleveland’s final pass of regulation rather than receiving it. Fortunately for the Cavs, LeBron vetoed his coach Jimmy Chitwood-style and nailed a buzzer-beater that sent the series back to Cleveland tied at 2 games apiece.
On Monday, Blatt admitted he screwed up. But in that admission, he also created a rather specious defense. You see, basketball coaches make A LOT of decisions each game. So many of them, in fact, that the only people who could possibly understand such pressure are…fighter pilots.
“A basketball coach makes 150 to 200 critical decisions during the course of a game, something that I think is paralleled only by a fighter pilot,” Blatt said in a Monday press conference.
