Beware, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton — the state of Iowa is no place for frontrunners this year.

With Iowa State’s 82-77 win over No. 1 Oklahoma Monday night, the Hawkeye State has improbably seen three of its four Division I universities knock off the top team in college basketball this season.

Hilton Coliseum is considered one of the toughest venues in the country, but surprisingly the Cyclones hadn’t beaten a top-ranked team since Wilt Chamberlain and Kansas in 1957.

No. 1 Kansas Outlasts No. 2 Oklahoma in Game for the Ages

Kansas Oklahoma

We’re just four days into 2016, but we’ve likely already seen the game of the year in college basketball.

It’s not very often that a matchup between the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the country can exceed expectations, but that’s exactly what we witnessed Monday night when Kansas and Oklahoma gave us a taste of March Madness before a raucous crowd at Allen Fieldhouse. IUPUI flying under radar in Summit League; notch win in conference opener

It hasn’t been all peaches and cream so far this season for IUPUI head coach Jason Gardner and his gritty Jaguars squad, to say the least.

A brutal pre-conference slate – including true road games at Marquette, NC State, Purdue, Creighton, Memphis and Butler – combined with the ineligibility of transfer guard Ron Patterson caused the Jags to enter conference play having already racked up 11 losses. But for every setback and every stumble, the incremental improvement has been noticeable; the glimmers of hope, aplenty.

Bo Ryan casts long shadow for his successor

From the moment Bo Ryan’s press conference started Tuesday night, something didn’t seem quite right.

He had arrived a bit later than usual for his postgame presser, which, while a little strange, isn’t exactly earth shattering. He then proceeded to give an opening statement, something that isn’t customary for Ryan and just added to the peculiarity of it all.

But even then, nothing could’ve prepared anyone watching for the bombshell announcement that, after nearly 15 years in Madison and four decades as a coach at the collegiate level, Bo Ryan is calling it a career.

Video: Derrick Jones Jr. throws down huge dunk for UNLV

    Derrick Jones dunk

College basketball has made its glorious return to the sports world and we’ve already seen some amazing stuff. On Monday night we got an early “Dunk of the Year” candidate thanks to UNLV freshman Derrick Jones Jr.

The Runnin’ Rebels had what has been termed a “game” against something called New Mexico Highlands University. UNLV destroyed the Cowboys 107-45 and Jones added insult to injury with an insane second-half dunk.

A look at possible replacements for Bo Ryan

Bo Ryan announced Monday that the 2015-’16 season will be his last at the helm in Madison, leaving Wisconsin fans and the college basketball world to thank him for all he’s done throughout his coaching career and to reminisce about all the wonderful memories that he’s responsible for.

But as those feelings of sadness, gratitude and nostalgia slowly subside, attention will turn to life after Bo Ryan and, more specifically, who will replace him at Wisconsin. No timetable has been set on how soon athletic director Barry Alvarez will name a replacement, but here’s a look at a handful of potential candidates to become the next head coach of the Wisconsin Badgers.

North Carolina charged with five Level I violations by NCAA

    North Carolina

The seemingly endless saga of North Carolina’s academic fraud scandal continued on Thursday, as the school finally released a 59-page notice of allegations from the NCAA. The document levied five serious charges against the school, including a lack of institutional control for a lack of oversight of an academic department regularly used by athletes.

The charges are broad and don’t necessarily focus on individual sports, but the document goes hard after the formerly-named African and Afro-American Studies department (AFAM). The NCAA regards the now well-known academic issues in the AFAM department as potential improper benefits. Athletes were reportedly allowed access to so-called “paper classes” and given other help non-athletes were not.

North Carolina receives NCAA notice of allegations

    North Carolina

On Friday, the University of North Carolina acknowledged that it had received a notice of allegations from the NCAA related to the school’s ongoing academic fraud scandal. UNC Chancellor Carol Folt and athletic director Bubba Cunningham claim the school is reviewing the notice and will release it publicly after certain redactions are made to comply with privacy laws.

UNC has 90 days to review the notice and respond to it. In a statement the school said, “We take these allegations very seriously, and we will carefully evaluate them to respond within the NCAA’s 90-day deadline.”

Jahlil Okafor will enter 2015 NBA Draft

    Jahlil Okafor

Well that didn’t take long. Just a few days after leading the Duke Blue Devils to an NCAA title, freshman center Jahlil Okafor has announced he will enter the 2015 NBA Draft. The 6-foot-11 All-American announced his intentions on Thursday and Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski referred to it as a “great decision.”

Okafor had a phenomenal freshman season and most see him as one of the draft’s top prospects. He is often grouped along with Kentucky freshman Karl-Anthony Towns as one of the top two players available. Okafor finished the 2014-15 season averaging 17.3 points, 8.5 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.4 blocks in 30.1 minutes per game. He also shot 66.4 percent from the field. The only really bad number he put up was a fairly brutal 51.0 percent from the free throw line.
